Opening reception April 13 from 12-4 p.m.
Julie F Hill is a British artist who employs an expanded approach to the photographic medium, creating sculptural installations that explore conceptions of deep-space and cosmological time. The astronomical image is shaped into formations that resemble uncanny meteorological or geological phenomena, creating immensities that we can walk amongst, or enter into. Enigmatic and illusory materials such as mirrors act as conduits or portals, inviting us to cross a threshold to experience the unknowable. Through such environments Hill questions scientific images and the technologies used to construct them.
The Space Out of Time considers the idea of cosmic immensity in relation to conceptions of time in Astronomy, which as a discipline is rooted in the practice of ‘looking back in time’, collecting celestial light in telescopic mirrors that has taken billions of light-years to reach us.
